Tambopata Research Center

Pioneering lodge in the pristine rainforest of the Tambopata National Reserve near Puerto Maldonado.

Overview

Immerse yourself in biodiversity at Tambopata Research Center. This remote lodge features just 24 rooms and is nestled inside the Tambopata National Reserve. With a mix of hands-on nature explorations and upscale amenities, a stay at Tambopata Research Center Lodge is a one-of-a-kind experience.

Life at Tambopata Research Center Lodge

If you are traveling to Peru to delve into the flora and fauna of the area, you will be happy to find that little separates you from nature at Tambopata Research Center. Your adventure begins with a 2.5-hour boat ride. As the river takes you further from civilization and into the Amazon, you will start to spot capybaras and caimans. In your room, an open wall gives you a front-row seat to the sights and sounds of the Amazon rainforest.

During the day, walk along 100-feet of elevated pathways within the lodge. These walkways, which put you at the ideal level between the jungle floor and canopy, are the perfect spot to see the rainforest come alive and observe herds of jungle hogs as they gather nuts from the nearby palm trees. Would you like to rejuvenate and relax after days of travel and adventure? Book an appointment at the lodge’s spa.

While a Swedish massage is always a hit, the Intense Jungle Massage is an experience like no other. Warm stones are used in conjunction with local Matico and Eucalyptus plants to soften skin, relax muscles and revitalize your body. Afterward, sip a refreshing Pisco Sour in the bar and pick up hand-made artisan goods at the boutique.

Excursions from Tambopata Research Center Lodge Tambopata Peru

Tambopata Research Center is located near five distinct wildlife habitats and provides ample opportunities to see everything from parrots to monkeys. Many guests are even thrilled to catch a peek of jaguars! Though you are free to mix and match activities, three predesigned itineraries, ranging from four to six days, are meticulously tailored to help you make the most of your time in Peru.

In the company of expert guides, you can hike through a bamboo forest searching for Howler and Dusky Titi Monkeys. Other hikes explore the swamp and rainforest in hopes of seeing Spider Monkeys and Capuchins as well as leaf-cutter ants and birds, including parakeets and woodpeckers. Watch vibrant orange and soft pink hues reflected on the river during a sunset cruise.

Macaws and Clay Licks at Tambopata Research Center Lodge

True to its name Tambopata Research Center is more than a vacation getaway and places a distinct focus on conservation research and protecting the macaw population. In 1989, the Tambopata Macaw Project was born with the goal of saving the species from the threats of hunting, logging, and black-market trading.

Central to these efforts is a natural clay lick in the area, which attracts hundreds of birds each day. Though it still is not understood why macaws are drawn to the clay lick, it is thought, thanks to the efforts of the Tambopata Macaw Project, that the birds need the sodium found in the salty soil. You can witness the phenomena firsthand on a dawn excursion.

Coffee in hand, you will set out by boat to the clay lick. As the skies begin to brighten, you will hear the first bird calls as Scarlet Macaws, Red and Green Macaws, Blue and Yellow Macaws, and Mealy Parrots descend to the clay lick. The flurry of color and sound is a spectacle you must see to believe.

For avid birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts, and world explorers, a stay at Tambopata Research Center is a must. Best of all, you can feel good about supporting the conservation efforts of this carbon-neutral lodge while also indulging in creature comforts such as spa services and three daily meals.

Explore The Oxbow Lake

AM - PM: Wildlife in the Amazon takes advantage of the first lights of the day as it is cooler, so we do. Even you are on vacation there will be some activities that our guides encourage you to make it very early in the morning and it’s worth it.

Tres Chimbadas oxbow lake is thirty minutes by boat and forty-five minutes hiking from Posada Amazonas. Once there paddle around the lake in a catamaran, searching for the resident family of nine giant river otters (seen by 60% of our lake visitors) and other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, hoatzin and horned screamers. Otters are most active from dawn to eight or nine AM.

The Centro Ñape is a communal organization that produces medicines out of forest plants and administers them to patients who choose their little clinic. They have produced a trail that explains the different medicinal (and other) uses of selected plants.

You will have the option of a night walk when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Is much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.

Join A Party Of Colors And Sounds

AM - PM: On most clear mornings of the year, dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on this large river bank in a raucous and colorful spectacle that inspired a National Geographic cover story. Discretely located fifty meters from the cliff, we will observe Green-winged, Scarlet, and Blue-and-gold Macaws and several species of smaller parrots descend to ingest clay. Outings are at dawn when the lick is most active.

This five-kilometer trail covers the prototypical rain forest with immense trees crisscrossed by creeks and ponds. Amongst the figs, ceibas, and shihuahuacos we will go for a monkey search Squirrel, Brown Capuchin, and Spider Monkeys as well as peccaries. The Tambopata Research Centre is located within this habitat.

Ten minutes upriver from the lodge explore the island where is a tiny pond with a platform in the middle. It is a great place to spot waterfowl such as Muscovy duck, sunbittern and hoatzin along with the woodpeckers, oropendolas, flycatchers, and parakeets that call this pond their home.

After dinner scientists will provide a night lecture, an in-depth look at the biology of macaws, their feeding habits, the theories for clay lick use, their breeding and feeding ecology, population fluctuations and the threats to their conservation.

Explore The Amazonian Forest

AM - PM: Every morning is different at the clay lick, because of that you have another chance to join the morning excursion. An entirely different habitat characterized by smaller, thinner trees atop hills and slopes is covered by this five-kilometer trail of terra firme forest. Saddleback tamarins are frequently found here. As we walk near the limits of the swamp we will also keep our eyes open for rare tapir tracks.

Growing on the remains of an oxbow lake and providing both arboreals as well as terrestrial mammals with fruits throughout the year, the aguaje palms are one of the most important food sources in the rainforest. Demand for these fruits and great conditions for planting rice makes the palm swamp also one of the most threatened habitats.
