Overview
The Mirante do Gavião Amazon Lodge, or “the hawk’s lookout” is a new sustainably-designed ecolodge, offering exclusive accommodation and access to one of the most bio-diverse and ecologically important areas of the planet: the Anavilhanas National Park – the second largest river archipelago in the world with more than 400 islands.
Located in Novo Airão, the last city accessible by land, 180km northwest of Manaus, deep in a region of great beauty in the Brazilian Amazon, the design hotel stands out for its grandeur and unusual design, based on Amazonian shipbuilding techniques. Its privileged position, with panoramic views of the nearby Rio Negro with its dark waters and dense vegetation, marks the scene where traditional tourism is left behind and the remote and preserved regions of the Amazon are revealed to guests.
Initially, the lodge was conceived to handle the embarkation and disembarkation of the owner’s fleet of traditional riverboats which have been based in Novo Airão since 2004. With few upscale accommodations in the area, the Mirante do Gavião jungle lodge went from a support point to a protagonist when its architectural project, designed by Atelier O´Reilly, received several awards in 2014, the year of its opening, detracting much of the attention of its “older brothers”, the boats.
Thus, the comfortable facilities and the Camu-Camu Restaurant, with the signature of chef Debora Shornik of renowned Manaus restaurant Caxiri Amazônia fame, gained their own concept and audience. Guests can choose from 13 curved, wooden suites across 3 cabin types: Treehouse, Luxury & Premium, which increase in size and comfort level. The family tree houses sleep up to six people, luxury suites with private balconies and hammocks are suitable for up to three people, and the premium suites with terraces and hot tubs cater to up to four people.
In addition to its restaurant, Mirante do Gavião has an outdoor swimming pool, a riverside pier, lounge and a number of elevated lookouts for spotting birds, sloths and iguanas in the time between activities. The lodge has a number of different activity programs ranging from one to five nights, which include visits to local Amazonian communities, the aforementioned Anavilhanas National Park, canoeing, forest trails and interaction with pink dolphins. A stay at Mirante do Gavião lodge can also be combined with programs aboard the owner’s riverboats for the ultimate in Brazilian Amazon exploration.
