Overview
Torres del Paine National Park, located within Chilean Patagonia, is home to some of the most intense and dramatic landscapes on the planet. Explora Salto Chico hotel is designed to help you connect with this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on the deepest level.
Life at Explora Torres del Paine
The scenery at Explora Salto Chico hotel is nothing short of mesmerizing. Explora’s first and arguably most iconic lodge is nestled on the banks of Lake Pehoé, with the Cordillera Paine mountain group towering in the background. Alongside the hotel, the Salto Chico waterfall drains Lake Pehoé of glacial meltwaters. The mineral content of the glacial water gives both the lake and waterfall a powder blue hue that seems a bit otherworldly. This is the scene that will greet you each morning when you wake in one of the lodge’s 49 rooms.
Aside from sweeping views of the mountains, lake, and waterfall, each room boasts luxurious touches, such as jetted bathtubs and king-sized beds. Just a short walk of 330 feet from the main building lies the spa. Here you can rest your body and rejuvenate your soul in the heated, covered pool, the steam sauna, and the four open-air Jacuzzis with river views. Every element of the Torres del Paine Explora lodge is designed to blend into the natural environment. Wood features prominently in the aesthetic of the lodge, and the use of lenga, cypress, and almendrillo timber echoes the surroundings.
Excursions from the Torres del Paine Explora lodge
Torres del Paine National Park contains diverse landscapes, including mountains, glaciers, lenga tree forests, prairies, and rivers, all of which are ripe for exploration. Not sure where to begin? The lodge’s expert guides will aid you in selecting explorations in keeping with your specific interests and desired physical activity level.
Horseback rides, treks, bike rides, self-guided jaunts, and overland activities reveal all the region has to offer. You may opt to take a catamaran across Lake Pehoé to hike in the shadow of a glacier. Bird watchers will appreciate the opportunity to leave the park on a van drive to a nearby lagoon that is home to several species.
The horses of the Torres del Paine Explora lodge
Huaso culture (Chile’s equivalent of Argentina’s guacho cowboys) is central to the history and traditions of Chilean Patagonia, so it’s no wonder that horses are also near to the heart of Explora Salto Chico hotel. With so many of the lodge’s activities done on horseback, it is crucial that the animals are healthy and well-trained. The stables at Explora Torres del Paine are led by Gaela Hourcq.
The expert veterinarian, who is a native of France, worked at prestigious stables across Europe, the US, and Japan before bringing her expertise to the lodge. Today, she guides the care, breeding, breaking, and feeding of the 26 horses at the lodge. Each horse at Explora Salto Chico is specifically trained to navigate the region’s terrain so that both experienced equestrians and novice riders can experience Patagonia on horseback.
Booking one of the three-room categories, including suites and interconnecting rooms, puts you in a prime location to discover the geography and wildlife of this unique biosphere. What memories will you make during your stay?
