Overview
Sailing from Manaus in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, the chic, four-cabin Manakin riverboat provides the perfect, private base for up to 12 guests to explore the natural wonders and cultural treasures of the rainforest. Named after the small, short-billed bird of the tropics celebrated for its boldness and charisma—and Michael Jackson-esque dance moves—this traditional, eco-friendly vessel similarly symbolizes courage and self- expression, embracing her individuality and confidently sharing her talents with the world.
Life Aboard The Manakin
Life aboard the Manakin centers around the ship’s upper observation deck. This open-air space features 360-degree views and is home to many of the ship’s amenities. Start the day with a cup of coffee from the nespresso machine and relax in the seating area, or breathe in all that natural splendor as you stretch on a yoga mat on the veranda. Or, select a novel from the onboard library to read in a hammock. In the evening, gather around the large dining table to enjoy a feast of Amazonian flavors and culinary artistry.
Guests are treated to a dining experience that showcases local ingredients, expertly crafted into traditional and modern dishes by skilled onboard chefs. From freshly caught fish and tropical fruits to unique regional spices, each meal is thoughtfully prepared to provide an authentic taste of the Amazon. Dining options range from multi-course meals to casual outdoor barbecues, all paired with refreshing local beverages and fine wines.

Whether indulging in a special dinner or a relaxed fish barbecue by the water, the culinary journey aboard the Manakin complements the adventure, offering guests a delicious way to connect with the culture and bounty of the region. Vegan, vegetarian, and kosher menu options are available.
On the lower deck, you’ll find an open kitchen, which is ideal for grabbing a snack or a glass of fresh fruit juice. The lower deck is also home to a swim deck and is where you will board the launch boat for safe, comfortable trips ashore. All four of the cabins, including the master suite, are also on this deck. The master suite, which is located on the ship’s bow, features 180-degree floor-to-ceiling windows for unparalleled views of the river.
During your time on the Manakin, you will be attended by six to seven crew members, who will provide butler and daily maid services. The ship is fully equipped with safety equipment, including sonar and a satellite phone, and silent generators that will not interrupt your peaceful holiday. Equipped with 110V solar-powered energy for charging cell phones, cameras, and laptops, the boat seamlessly combines eco-friendly technology with a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.
Bespoke Excursions
Though days of watching local wildlife from the comforts of your cabin might be relaxing, the riverboat’s range of exciting excursions is sure to tempt you ashore. Aboard a Manakin cruise, bespoke excursions provide an authentic experience centered on the things that excite you most. Daily activities include excursions by canoe to access places the boat cannot reach, skiff rides to distant locations, and on-foot visits to special sites and local communities, allowing guests to meet and interact with remarkable people along the way.
Hike or canoe along tributaries to freshwater waterfalls and get up-close peeks at wildlife, including endangered scarlet macaws. Serenely explore lagoons on a standup paddleboard. Or try your hand at catch-and-release fishing with the equipment provided. You may wish to delve into the colonial past with a visit to a local rubber plantation. Or, if you have a more low-key holiday in mind, soak up the sun on a deserted river beach.
Fly Camping—available as an add-on on 5-day and 8-day itineraries during the dry season—is an unforgettable overnight experience immersed in nature, set on a secluded beach around a campfire in the heart of the Rio Negro, with the Manakin riverboat serving as your support base. This magical adventure allows you to sleep under the starry sky, surrounded by the sounds of wildlife, while resting comfortably beneath a mosquito net tent.
Alternatively, experience the thrill of ascending into the canopy of the Amazon Rainforest with a guided recreational tree climbing activity. Using professional equipment and techniques, participants climb towering trees under the guidance of experienced instructors. As you ascend, you’ll gain a unique perspective of the rainforest, with panoramic views of the lush canopy and the chance to observe wildlife such as birds, monkeys, and insects in their natural habitat. The climb is tailored to individual comfort levels, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
In general, the itineraries aboard the Manakin do not require a high level of physical fitness, as most wildlife viewing is conducted on foot or from small motorized boats. The majority of activities involve walking along nature trails through the rainforest. Guests should be prepared to walk in high humidity and navigate uneven terrain with exposed roots to fully enjoy all activities. At times, walking on muddy trails or through shallow standing water may be necessary. Participation in all activities is optional, allowing guests to select experiences that best match their comfort level.
Exclusive Experiences
The Manakin is exclusively available for private charters, allowing guests to savor once-in-a-lifetime adventures as a close-knit group without sacrificing privacy. Perfect for couples, families, or small groups of friends, the Manakin is ideal for those seeking an intimate, exclusive, and personalized slow-travel rainforest experience. Choose from our base itineraries or let us design a unique journey tailored to your preferences.
