Bugis

A spacious solar-powered yacht offering off-the-beaten track, eco-conscious cruises across Indonesia.

Overview

The Bugis yacht offers an unparalleled sailing experience through Indonesia’s most captivating and lesser-known archipelagos. Meticulously crafted by Bugis shipwrights—from where she gets her name—this 27-meter (89-foot) traditional phinisi schooner combines all the charm of a classic wooden vessel with modern amenities and sustainable practices to provide guests with a comfortable, eco-conscious, and authentic journey across Indonesia.

With just 4 cabins on board, the Bugis is ideal for private charters for groups of up to 8-10 guests or intimate shared trips with a handful of other likeminded fellow adventurers seeking a slow and rewarding travel experience that both limits their impact on the environment and also benefits local communities.

Life on Board

The boat’s architectural concept prioritizes open areas, allowing guests to connect with the elements. As air-conditioned cabins would require quilts, closed doors and windows and would effectively negate the tropical experience—not to mention be worse for the environment—the Bugis’ cabins aren’t air-conditioned but instead are located on the main deck, not below deck like many other vessels, so that the sea breeze keeps the median temperature on board approximately 3 degrees Celsius cooler than on land.

Also on the main deck, the shaded, “wall-less” 30-sqm social-cum-dining area similarly provides guests with unrestricted open-air views, and ample space to relax, dine, drink, play board games, and more. On the equally spacious upper sundeck, you will find a semi-covered 45-sqm area equipped with a bar and an open area to do yoga, read, relax, sunbathe, or simply take in the stunning views of the archipelago, or even party at night.

Guests can enjoy gourmet meals prepared by an onboard chef, featuring fresh local ingredients and a fusion of regional and international cuisine. Indeed, instead of having a fixed meal plan each day, each meal’s ingredients are handpicked from the nearest local market so there’ll be no imported produce of any kind served.

The 9-strong experienced crew—including a cruise director and dive guide—provides a more than a 1:1 guest-to-crew ratio to ensure personalized service and attention to detail, making every moment on board memorable.

Private Or Shared Off-The-Beaten-Track Experiences

The Bugis yacht offers both shared trips and private charters to off-the-beaten-track destinations in Indonesia. Her founders have extensively traveled throughout the region for the last 30 years, and have handpicked a few exceptional and little-known cruise destinations that allow you to fully connect with nature and immerse yourself in authentic experiences.

Guests can explore the renowned Komodo Islands, home to the famous Komodo dragons and vibrant marine life. The remote and untouched Flores Sea offers rich biodiversity, while Wakatobi National Park provides world-class diving and snorkeling opportunities. Additionally, the lesser-known Banggai Archipelago, home to the Bajau sea nomads, offers unique cultural encounters and marine species.

These far-flung voyages provide ample opportunity to participate in various activities such as diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and cultural interactions with local communities. The option to charter the vessel privately allows guests to personalize their itinerary, tailoring their journey to focus more on their interests and the activities that they prefer.

Sustainability at Sea

The yacht’s focus on sustainable and responsible tourism practices ensures that guests can enjoy their adventure while minimizing their environmental impact. Her owners strive to keep the carbon and ecological footprint as low as possible by using solar powered electricity as much as possible when the boat is not navigating, only turning on the generator when needed, so that guests can expect a serene ambiance aboard, peaceful sunset drinks, and quiet nights with the sounds of crashing waves to the hull.

Profits from cruising also help fund their social initiative which involves the transformation of plastic waste into fuel (pyrolysis), simultaneously reducing harmful plastic pollution and bringing resilience to local ecosystems and revenue to local communities, and helping to regenerate biodiversity in their destinations.

With its combination of adventure, eco-luxury, and cultural immersion, the Bugis yacht provides a unique and unforgettable way to explore Indonesia’s hidden gems in comfort and style.

Itineraries & Prices

Hoga Island

AM & PM: We will drop the anchor early morning at the southern tip of Hoga island, nearby Kaledupa Island. Fringed by mangrove forest and beaches shaded by coconut trees, those islands have a lot to offer for the two days we’ll spend there. A visit to a Bajo village entirely built on stilts above the sea is a must. In the past these `sea gypsies` were more nomadic, living on their boats. Today they live more seditiously in houses on stilts, but they still rely.

Batuata Island

AM & PM: With its high cliffs towering over a heavenly beach lined with coconut trees, Batuata is definitely one of the most scenic island of the region. After setting foot ashore, we pay respect to the local Chief, ask for permission to go around and see the island. We visit the local school, hear the children singing the latest local hits. This is truly a remote place, far away from other islands and you will definitely enjoy the remoteness of it.
